Six decades ago, in July 1964, The Kinks recorded their breakthrough song, "You Really Got Me." The iconic track was released in their native England on August 4th, 1964, and made its U.S. debut a month later on September 2nd. The song not only topped the U.K. chart but also secured the seventh spot in the U.S., marking a significant milestone in the band's long career.
To celebrate the anniversary, The Kinks are re-issuing "You Really Got Me," backed with "It's All Right," in its original format. The song will be released on limited-edition seven-inch vinyl on August 16th, available through their official webstore and Rough Trade stores. This special edition will be a limited pressing of 1964 hand-numbered copies, featuring audio remastered in the original mono and the original 1964 Pye Records push-out center.
Pre-ordering from The Kinks’ official store comes with an exclusive seven-inch sized print and a special message from the band. Reflecting on the song that started it all, Kinks frontman Ray Davies shared, “They wouldn’t let me sing because I had a gap in my teeth...Then I sang 'You Really Got Me' and it gave me the confidence...It just made me grow up. That whole process was me, a really shy, interesting person turning into a confident bore.”
