In a recent Facebook update, Chrissie Hynde addressed the question that has been on fans' minds for years: why doesn't the band play in larger venues like arenas? Hynde's response was straightforward and unapologetic. She explained that clubs and theaters provide a better experience for both the audience and the band, emphasizing the intimacy and connection these smaller venues offer.
Hynde went on to share her personal perspective on the matter. She confessed that she has never stayed for a three-hour show and prefers to see the band on stage rather than on screens when she's part of the audience. Similarly, when she's performing, she enjoys being able to see every audience member, even those at the back of the balcony. This preference for a more personal and engaging concert experience clearly influences the band's choice of venues.
Despite the potential for increased earnings and prestige that larger venues might offer, Hynde made it clear that The Pretenders are not interested in these superficial benefits. She candidly stated, "We really don’t give a [crap] about that stuff." While the band has enjoyed supporting acts like Stevie Nicks, Phil Collins, Guns N’ Roses, and Foo Fighters in large venues, they prefer to keep their own shows "reined in," staying true to their love for intimate performances.
