David Bowie tops with 'SNL' musical guests

Since its premiere in 1975, Saturday Night Live has featured hundreds of musical guests, starting with Billy Preston. Over the years, nearly every major act has graced the SNL stage. Gavin Edwards, a veteran writer for Rolling Stone who was seven when SNL first aired, has compiled a list of what he considers “The 50 Best Musical Performances in Saturday Night Live History.”

In creating this list, Edwards set specific criteria, allowing only one song per musical act, though exceptions were made for performers who backed other acts. He also excluded performances that were part of comedy segments, such as Taylor Swift’s “Monologue Song,” Steve Martin’s “King Tut,” and many others.  According to Edwards, these 50 songs did more than just fill time; they provided memorable musical moments that stood out in SNL’s long history.

Topping the list is David Bowie’s iconic performance of “The Man Who Sold the World” on December 15th, 1979. The rest of the top ten includes performances by The Replacements, Elvis Costello, Prince, Radiohead, Patti Smith, Kendrick Lamar, Rage Against the Machine, Jack White, and Neil Young.
