There's a movement in the U.K. to make Electric Light Orchestra's classic hit "Mr. Blue Sky" the number one song for Christmas. This campaign, dubbed "Mr. Blue Sky for Christmas Number 1," was initiated by DJ and social media campaigner Jon Morter. Morter is no stranger to such endeavors; he famously propelled Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name" to the top of the charts for the holidays back in 2009. This time, his goal is to promote the Bluesky app as a preferable alternative to Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter.
Jon Morter explained the motivation behind the campaign, noting that many Bluesky users were enthusiastic about the idea. “It certainly became apparent after I’d made the suggestion that many on the Bluesky app want to make it happen to help promote the new place [now that] many are going away from X/Twitter. If nothing else it will be a lot of fun to see if Bluesky users can have an impact on the annual Christmas number one race,” he said. The campaign has garnered significant attention and support, making it a fun and engaging effort for the Bluesky community.
However, the competition is fierce. "Mr. Blue Sky" will be up against perennial Christmas favorites like Wham!'s "Last Christmas" and Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You." Additionally, this year's contenders include the "Do They Know It's Christmas? 2024 Ultimate Mix" from Band Aid 40 and new holiday tracks from artists like Ed Sheeran.
