ZZ Top is officially beardless for the first time in a long while. Founding drummer Frank Beard, the only member without a beard, has temporarily stepped away from the current tour to attend to a health issue. According to their spokesman, Beard needs to focus on his health in the near term. This unexpected development has left fans concerned but hopeful for his speedy recovery.
In true ZZ Top fashion, the Texas band has seamlessly adapted to the change. Just as they did in 2021 when bassist Dusty Hill passed away and his tech Elwood Francis stepped in, they have now turned to longtime tech member, percussionist, and drummer John Douglas. Douglas also filled in for Beard back in 2002 when he underwent an emergency appendectomy in Paris. His close relationship with Beard and the bandmates makes him the perfect fit for this temporary role.
The spokesman reassured fans, stating, "Mr. Douglas has maintained a close relationship with Beard and the bandmates, having served with the group in the past." He added that Beard is looking forward to a speedy recovery. Meanwhile, ZZ Top's Elevation tour continues, with their next stop in Hiawassee, Georgia, on Tuesday.
