Eric Clapton celebrated a milestone birthday on Sunday, turning 80 years old. Born Eric Patrick Clapton in Ripley, England on March 30th, 1945, Clapton's early life was marked by a unique family dynamic. Raised by his grandparents, he never knew his father and only discovered as a teenager that the woman he believed to be his sister was actually his mother. Despite challenges, Clapton's musical journey began to take shape, leading him to become one of the most influential guitarists in rock ‘n roll history.
Clapton first gained prominence as a member of The Yardbirds, where his exceptional guitar skills started to attract attention. He then joined John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, further honing his craft before forming the legendary band Cream with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. Cream's innovative blend of blues and rock set the stage for Clapton's enduring legacy. Following Cream's breakup, Clapton continued to push musical boundaries with Blind Faith, collaborating with Steve Winwood to create yet another iconic sound.
Clapton has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame three times: as a member of The Yardbirds, Cream, and as a solo artist.
