Foreigner's Kelly Hansen is leaving

Foreigner lit up the stage on Tuesday night’s season finale of NBC’s The Voice with a medley of their classic hits: “Feels Like the First Time,” “Juke Box Hero,” and “I Want To Know What Love Is.” But it wasn’t just the music that had fans buzzing—it was a heartfelt announcement from longtime frontman Kelly Hansen that marked the end of an era. Hansen, who has led the band since 2005, revealed he’ll be stepping down after their upcoming summer tour. The torch is being passed to Luis Maldonado, the band’s guitarist who recently filled in as lead vocalist during their Central and South American tour.

Hansen’s announcement was met with sincere emotion and applause. “Being the voice of Foreigner has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” he said. “But it’s time to pass the mic. Luis has the voice, the energy, and the soul to carry these songs into the future.” Maldonado then took center stage with a rousing rendition of “Juke Box Hero,” before the two shared vocals on the iconic “I Want To Know What Love Is.” Maldonado, who previously played with Train from 2016 to 2021, expressed his excitement: “This music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I’m ready to honor Foreigner's legacy and bring my heart to every performance.”

Mick Jones, Foreigner’s founder and former guitarist, weighed in from the sidelines as he continues his battle with Parkinson’s disease. “Kelly Hansen is one of the best front men in our business,” he said. “His boundless energy and flawless talent helped us climb the mountain. Now, Luis Maldonado will bring us home.” Foreigner’s summer tour kicks off June 11th in Highland, California.
