The States With The Best (And Worst) Health Care

Everyone needs quality health care they can afford, but finding it can be a challenge. It’s expensive in the U.S., with the average American spending almost $14,600 a year on personal health care, according to the most recent estimates from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Meeting your medical needs within your budget is easier in parts of the country than others and a new report reveals where those are.

  • WalletHub has determined the best and worst states for healthcare in the U.S.
  • They rated all 50 states and Washington, D.C. on 44 metrics related to cost, accessibility and outcome to come up with their ranking.
  • They looked at everything from average monthly insurance premiums to physicians per capita to life expectancy and more.
  • Based on all of that, this year’s best state for health care is New Hampshire, which comes in second for both cost and outcomes, and 15th for access.
  • Iowa, fourth overall, is number one for cost, while North Dakota, eighth overall, is first for access, and Massachusetts, fifth overall, is tops for outcomes.
  • The worst state for health care is Mississippi, coming in dead last for outcomes and 41st for access.
