America's Dewey Bunnell Stepping Away?

America may be nearing its final stretch. Co-founder Dewey Bunnell, who is the last original member of the band after Gerry Beckley retired in 2023, says he’s starting to feel the wear and tear of being on the road. Bunnell admitted to Rolling Stone he still loves performing—but as he gets closer to 75, the grind is catching up with him after more than five decades on the road.

It’s not the stage, it’s everything around it including the late nights, early mornings, flights, and constant travel. He says what used to be exciting is now taking a real physical toll. After 56 years of touring, Dewey says he’s “been there and done that,” and the life he enjoys off the road is becoming more important to him. He’s not ready to officially call it quits yet but says a decision could come later this year.

If he does step away, don’t expect a long farewell tour. Like Gerry Beckley, Bunnell isn’t sold on saying goodbye every night and isn’t eager to turn it into a big sendoff. He’s keeping his options open. As for America’s legacy—including their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame absence—Bunnell stays humble, pointing to longevity and success over innovation. For now, the band keeps rolling with dates well into June and a return to the road scheduled for this fall.
