A National Weather Service Flood Watch remains in effect for the region as additional runoff and rainfall threaten low-lying areas.Major Impacts & Road Closures.
Interstate 35: Flash floods completely submerged both northbound and southbound lanes south of Waco overnight. Texas DPS and first responders conducted rescue operations for multiple stranded vehicles between mile markers 330 and 327 (near Hewitt and Robinson). While northbound lanes and localized access bypasses were opened to divert trapped drivers, deep water and stalled vehicles continue to cause severe traffic disruptions.
Local Roads & Neighborhoods: Intense street flooding has been reported along Hewitt Drive, the Creekside neighborhood, and the 900 block of Wooded Acres. Local authorities, including the Hewitt Police Department, are strictly urging residents to stay home.Waterways & Recreational Areas: Lake Waco is heavily flooded and sits nearly 20 feet over its normal levels. Because of this, large sections of the downtown Riverwalk and the Cameron Park river trail are entirely underwater and closed to the public.
- Turn Around, Don't Drown: Never attempt to drive or wade through flooded streets or low-water crossings. Flash floodwaters can sweep vehicles away in moments.
- Avoid Unnecessary Travel: Stay off the roads in heavily impacted areas like Hewitt, southern Waco, and Lorena to give emergency personnel clear access for water rescues.
- Monitor Local Updates: Track evolving weather threats via the National Weather Service (NWS) Flood Safety Portal or tune in to local coverage from KWTX News 10 for real-time traffic closures.
