Ronnie Spector and others remember Phil Specter after his death

Ronnie Spector has gone on record saying the death of her former husband and producer Phil Spector is, "A sad day for music and a sad day for me."

Ronnie was the voice of 60’s Ronettes like "Be My Baby," "Walking in the Rain" and "Do I Love You.”She posted on Instagram, "When I was working with Phil Spector, watching him create in the recording studio, I knew I was working with the very best. He was in complete control, directing everyone... The magical music we were able to make together, was inspired by our love. I loved him madly, and gave my heart and soul to him."

Ronnie also spoke of the chasm between Spector’s professional accomplishments and personal feelings saying, "As I said many times while he was alive, he was a brilliant producer, but a lousy husband. Unfortunately Phil was not able to live and function outside of the recording studio. Darkness set in, many lives were damaged. I still smile whenever I hear the music we made together, and always will. The music will be forever."

A couple of legends who worked with Spector also shared their feelings following his death this weekend:

  • Darlene Love on Facebook: "I’m feeling a range of different emotions right now. I feel a sigh of relief but emptiness too. Another chapter in my life has come to an end. A truly sad ending to a brilliant music pioneer. I will say, if it weren’t for Phil there would never be a Darlene Love."
  • Bill Medley of The Righteous Brothers has gone on record calling Phil "a genius" for his work on the duo's classic songs "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" and "Just Once in My Life." In an exclusive conversation, he remain awed at not just the producer's work, but how he was able to craft such amazing recordings using what we now consider primitive studio gear.
