John Mellencamp has gone on record talking about his new song “Wasted Days” with Bruce Springsteen on vocals and guitar. The song was released yesterday.
Mellancamp said, "'Wasted Days' was recorded before this pandemic even started. I'm sure a lot of people will think that the song is about the pandemic, but it's not. It was just about the maturing of baby boomers and we start reflecting on how many empty days are still in front of us and what we plan on doing with them."
John has said Springsteen has always been an “Inspiration” to him, but they became good friends when they both performed at Sting’s rainforest benefit in New York in December, 2019.
Mellencamp talked about performing with The Boss at that benefit, which eventually led to their collaboration on “Wasted Days”:
"We just hit it off. He was like my big brother all of a sudden. I just felt that connection with him that I very rarely feel with other artists. I just felt like he was a kindred spirit and I think that he probably felt something similar. And, I would say, probably, he's one of my better friends in my life right now."
Mellencamp talked about working with Springsteen’s visual consultant Thom Zimmy on the video for “Wasted Days”:
"They did a wonderful job and the cinematography's wonderful and it was very easy. You know, I directed all my own videos for years and they're always chaotic and weird. But this was really professional."
“Wasted Days” is the first song John ever recorded with Springsteen and it’ll be featured on Mellencamp’s new album, ‘Strictly a One-Eyed Jack,’ which will be released in 2022.Mellencamp is also hoping for a tour beginning in March.
