Tommy Shaw may have just come up with the makings of a new Styx song on a recent Rock Legends Cruise.
Back in 2015, on a cruise ship, Shaw was playing around on his guitar and came up with what turned into the Styx song "Mission to Mars." That experience inspired him to continue writing and that led to 2017's The Mission, which was the first Styx album of all original material in 14 years.
Shaw talked about recently coming up with the parts of a new song on the Rock Legends Cruise:
"I was just practicing and I came up with this thing and it's like, 'ah.' So I refined it a little bit and listened to it. Then I went, 'Okay, I'll do a harmony part to it and add some effects on it. It was very déjà vu. So next thing you know you're making an album in your head. So, it's just a short leap to get in the studio and start putting it together."
Styx has actually released two albums in the past five years, including 2021's Crash of the Crown. They’ll be on a summer tour with REO Speedwagon and Loverboy.
