The Rolling Stones and U2 have have certainly been two of the top grossing rock 'n roll concert acts of all time. Pollstar has revealed those two bands are the tops of the past 40 years.
Pollstar is widely recognized as the leading concert industry publication. The celebrate their 40th anniversary, the company has compiled a list of "Top Touring Artists of the Pollstar Era."
The top 150 headlining concert acts over the past 40 years were compiled through thousands of box-office reports. As expected The Rolling Stones and U2 are #1 and #2 respectively.
The Stones raked in $2.165 billion by gross with 22.14 million tickets sold. U2 grossed $2.128 billion with over 26 million tickets sold. 15 other concert acts surpassed $1 billion by gross, but only The Rolling Stones and U2 surpassed $2 billion.
Some of the other acts with over 20 million tickets sold include the Dave Matthews Band at 23.28 million tickets, along with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band at 20.85 million. These results show the tremendous popularity of these acts whose appeal spans people of all ages.
