Darlene Love’s "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" became a Christmas favorite when it was included on the 1963 Phil Spector holiday album ‘A Christmas Gift To You.’
The song was written by legendary songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. The recording session for the song included vocals from Leon Russell and Glen Campbell. What you may not have known is a very young Cher was a backup singer on the song.
Darlene still jokes at times that Cher actually drowns her out in the final mix for the song. “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” was released for the holiday season in 1963.David Letterman, a longtime fan and friend of Darlene’s and a big fan of that song, invited her to perform it on his show for 28 consecutive years, from 1986 through 2014.
Since Letterman left TV, Darlene performs the song annually on ‘The View’ on ABC.
Darlene commented on what has become her signature song, saying, "Phil said that Jeff and Ellie had written an original song. I said, 'How are you going to do an original song, with all these classics?' I love the whole idea, how it started and everything. But who would have thought, that that would be my signature song?"
