Friday would have been Tom Petty's 73rd birthday, and two more previously unreleased songs by the late rock legend have been released, along with some special editions of his albums.
The first song is "What's the Matter With Louise", a catchy tune that Petty wrote and recorded during the sessions for his 1994 album Wildflowers. The song is available on Amazon as part of the promotion for the 2021 film Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free: The Making of Wildflowers, which is streaming on Prime Video. The film documents the creative process behind one of Petty's most acclaimed albums.
The second song is "Mystery of Love", a bluesy rocker that Petty recorded with his band The Heartbreakers for their 2010 album Mojo. The song is part of Extra Mojo Version, an expanded edition of Mojo that features 10 bonus tracks, including alternate versions, outtakes and live performances. Extra Mojo Version is available digitally today, along with a red vinyl edition of Mojo.
These two songs are the latest in a series of posthumous releases by Petty's estate, which has been honoring his legacy and sharing his music with his fans. Earlier this year, they released Finding Wildflowers (Alternate Versions), a collection of 16 alternate takes from the Wildflowers sessions. They also released Angel Dream (Songs and Music from the Motion Picture She's the One), a reimagined version of Petty's 1996 soundtrack album.
Tom Petty died in 2017 from an accidental overdose of painkillers. He was one of the most influential and beloved rock artists of all time, with a career that spanned four decades and produced dozens of hits. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
