Selena Gomez is set to play Linda Ronstadt in a biopic based on her 2013 memoir ‘Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir.’ The film, which is currently in pre-production, will chronicle Ronstadt's life and career, from her humble beginnings in Tucson, Arizona, to her rise to fame as a rock, country, and pop icon in the 1970s and 1980s.
Gomez, who shares Ronstadt's Mexican heritage, teased the news in an Instagram story on Wednesday, before deleting her social media accounts. Rolling Stone confirmed the casting on Thursday, but did not reveal any details about the director, writer, or release date of the film. It is also unclear whether the film will be released in theaters or on a streaming platform.
Ronstadt, who is now 75 and retired from singing due to Parkinson's disease, has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and won 10 Grammy Awards.
This is not the first time that Ronstadt's life and legacy have been brought to the screen. In 2019, a documentary titled Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice, directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, was released to critical acclaim and won a Grammy Award for Best Music Film. The documentary featured interviews with Ronstadt and her peers, such as Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Don Henley, and Aaron Neville, as well as archival footage and performances.
