On May 5th, 1969, The Beatles released the U.S. single "Get Back," backed with "Don't Let Me Down." Initially a standalone single, it was later remixed and featured as the closing track on their iconic "Let It Be" album. The album was released in the UK on May 8th, 1970, and ten days later in the U.S., on May 18th, 1970.
"Get Back" was written and sung by Paul McCartney, though it was credited to Lennon-McCartney. McCartney described the song's creation as a spontaneous process, saying in the song's press release, "We were sitting in the studio, and we made it up out of thin air ... we started to write words there and then ... when we finished it, we recorded it at Apple Studios and made it into a song to roller-coast by."
Ringo Starr also shared his thoughts on "Get Back." He said, "It's a fairly simple song, really, and that rhythm I was doing was just like when you're working it out, y'know, it's just like something to do. [hand claps, thigh slaps] Just, y'know, instead of doot-doot-dot-dot, y'know. And it really sounded good with the piece, y'know, so I just kept it in.”
The song, credited to the band "With Billy Preston" on keyboards, topped the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks.
