The Outlaw Music Festival Tour, co-headlined by Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan, kicked off on Friday in Alpharetta, Georgia. However, the 91-year-old Nelson, who was not feeling well, was advised by his doctors to skip at least the first three shows of the tour. His son, Lukas Nelson, stepped up to lead the Family Band in his stead. The opening show also saw special guests Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks performing a few numbers.
Bob Dylan, on the other hand, surprised the audience with an unexpected set on Friday, which included a mix of '50s covers, songs from his 2012 album "Tempest", and a few other random tracks. Over the weekend, Dylan switched up his set for the shows in Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina, retaining some songs from the opening night but adding a few from his 1965 album "Highway 61 Revisited", a Grateful Dead cover "Stella Blue", and one each from "Nashville Skyline", "Oh Mercy" and "Time Out of Mind".
The first half of the tour also features performances by Celisse, Robert Plant, and Allison Krauss. Their set stood out for the inclusion of three songs from the Led Zeppelin catalog: "Rock and Roll", "The Battle of Evermore", and "When the Levee Breaks", which they played on each of the first three nights. The Outlaw Music Festival Tour will continue Wednesday in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with hopes of Willie Nelson's return.
We wish Willie all the best in a speedy recovery.
