Rock Hall: Honor them before they go

Guitarist Joe Bonamassa has recently voiced his criticism of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, urging them to honor deserving older artists before they pass away. In an interview on the Artists on Record podcast, Bonamassa expressed his disappointment that the late John Mayall, who passed away last week at 90, did not live to see his induction into the Hall of Fame. He argued that Mayall, along with Alexis Korner, who will receive the Musical Influence Award this year, should have been inducted decades ago.

Bonamassa further emphasized the importance of recognizing these artists while they are still alive, stating that posthumous inductions do not carry the same significance. He cited the example of his friend Chris Squire from the band Yes, who was inducted a year after his death. Bonamassa stressed that there are many artists now in their late 70s and 80s who should have been recognized long ago and urged the Hall of Fame to act quickly.

In addition to advocating for earlier recognition of deserving artists, Bonamassa suggested changes to the induction ceremony. He proposed holding a separate ceremony and dinner the day before the televised broadcast to honor those artists who may not be as active or popular. He mentioned Los Lobos and anything with Paul Rodgers, including The Firm, Free, and Bad Company, as deserving of such recognition. This year's induction ceremony, scheduled for October 19th in Cleveland, will posthumously honor Jimmy Buffett and the MC5.
