U2 is back in the studio, working on new music that promises to bring a fresh sound to their extensive discography. The Edge recently shared with Rolling Stone that he and Bono have been busy in Dublin, recording demos and experimenting with new tunes. This creative burst was fueled by the COVID lockdown, during which The Edge immersed himself in creating tracks and song ideas. The band is currently sifting through material, enjoying the “honeymoon period” of experimentation and exploring various musical themes. While the guitar will play a significant role in their upcoming album, it won’t be a traditional rock record but rather, they say, a unique use of the instrument.
Drummer Larry Mullen, who had to sit out their Las Vegas residency due to back surgery, is also contributing to the new project. The Edge mentioned that Mullen is in great form and it’s wonderful to have him back in the studio. The band is not yet focused on touring, though there have been some discussions about future plans. The Edge hinted that their next tour will likely be a response to their recent Sphere shows, aiming for something quite different, though the specifics are still up in the air.
In the meantime, we can look forward to the release of a deluxe edition of their 2004 album, now titled “How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb,” set for release on November 22nd.
