Heart's Nancy Wilson recalls her first Led Zeppelin concert

Nancy Wilson of Heart has a fascinating story about her first encounter with Led Zeppelin. Despite Heart's later success covering Zeppelin songs and even performing for them at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2012, Nancy's initial reaction to the band was quite different. In an interview with Premiere Guitar, she recalled seeing Led Zeppelin open for The Fifth Dimension at the Green Lake Aqua Theater in Seattle back in May 1969. Nancy and her friends, who were part of a little folk band from the suburbs, were taken aback by Robert Plant's suggestive performance. With his shirt wide open and low-rider jeans, Plant's stage presence was a shock to their more conservative sensibilities.

Nancy described how she and her friends were “scandalized” by the band's performance, particularly when they played "The Lemon Song." The lyrics and Plant's delivery were too much for the young, square hippie chicks, as Nancy put it. They were so shocked by the lewdness of the performance that they decided to leave the venue.

Despite this initial reaction, Heart went on to embrace Led Zeppelin's music, recording several of their songs over the years, including "Stairway to Heaven," "Going to California," "Misty Mountain Hop," "Rock and Roll," "The Battle of Evermore," and "Black Dog." Nancy's story points out how first impressions can change and how influential Led Zeppelin's music became for Heart.
