Remembering Glenn Frey's acting debut

This Saturday, February 1st, marks the 40th anniversary of Glenn Frey of the Eagles making his acting debut as a pilot on an episode of NBC's Miami Vice that was based on his song "Smuggler's Blues." In the mid-1980s, he and Eagles manager Irving Azoff acquired the film rights to a novel called Snowblind: A Brief Career in the Cocaine Trade. Frey said it was this film, and not Miami Vice, that inspired writing the song with Jack Tempchin that would be linked with the show.

Glenn mentioned that “Smuggler's Blues” was written for a film that never got made, not for Miami Vice. He explained, "’Smuggler's Blues' was going to be maybe the end title for that film. So Jack Tempchin and I had been reading that script and, though the film never got made, we wrote the song as if there was going to be a film about it. Little did we know that nine months later drugs would be on NBC at 10 o’clock at night and people would be staying home to watch it. But that just sorta happened later and then we partnered up with the people on Miami Vice."

Frey's other acting credits included a role in Wiseguy on CBS, which led to the starring role in another CBS show, South of Sunset, which was canceled after one episode. In the late '90s, he guest-starred on Nash Bridges, also on CBS, and in 2002 he appeared on HBO's Arliss, playing a political candidate. He also had roles on the big screen, including Let's Get Harry in 1986, and Jerry Maguire in 1996. Frey passed away on January 18th, 2016 due to complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis, and pneumonia. He was 67.
