The Led Zeppelin documentary, ‘Becoming Led Zeppelin,’ opens in over 1,000 regular theaters nationwide this weekend. The film had the biggest debut weekend for any IMAX music exclusive released, taking in over $3 million. Director Bernard McMahon shared that the success and reception from Zeppelin fans have been overwhelming.
McMahon said, "Nothing prepares you for when you get this call from Sony Pictures Classics going, 'It's the most successful IMAX music film of all time.' They set up these things where they have you come in as almost a surprise guest at a screening just for the public. And so these people are coming up to you and they're like, 'Dude, we've watched your film three times already.'" While there are rumors that the film will return to IMAX theaters soon, a spokesperson for the film has stated that nothing has been confirmed yet.
Becoming Led Zeppelin tells the story of the band's beginnings through their second album, Led Zeppelin II. It features all three living members talking about growing up in England, including Robert Plant. In one segment, Plant reminisces about his childhood and the moment rock and roll struck a chord with him: "I grew up in the west Midlands. My father's bloodline was from there. And my mother's side of the family are Romany-gypsy. My childhood was very sheltered until my parents took me to a big school in a big town. I was studying to be an accountant. But when Little Richard appeared, it was so provocative and all-consuming and hypnotic it kind of knocked everything else out of the water. That was it. The syringe was in the arm forever."
