Pete Townshend, the legendary guitarist and songwriter for The Who, once famously declared, “I hope I die before I get old” in the band’s 1965 anthem “My Generation.” Now, on May 19, 2025, Townshend celebrates his 80th birthday—a milestone that stands in stark contrast to the rebellious spirit of that famous lyric. Despite a life marked by intense creativity, personal struggles, and years of drug and alcohol abuse, Pete’s not only survived but continues to reflect legacy.
Born in 1945, just as World War II was ending, Townshend recalls that his father wasn’t even present at his birth—he was in Germany, entertaining victorious Allied troops. “I’m just continuing the family tradition,” he says, reflecting on his life and career. “I just hope we remain victorious, to be honest, because I think we have a great way of life and I think we’re good people… and if we’re getting things wrong now, let’s try and work out how to improve that.”
Looking back on his time with The Who, Townshend credits the band’s unique chemistry for their success. “I couldn’t have had better men beside me,” he says. “If we’d all thought like I did, it would’ve been a complete mess.”
