Jeff Lynne has officially canceled what was meant to be the grand finale of Electric Light Orchestra’s farewell tour, originally scheduled for this Sunday at BST Hyde Park in London. The announcement came last weekend, with Lynne’s team confirming that he is currently battling a “systemic infection” and is under medical care. “Jeff Lynne is heartbroken to report that he will not be able to perform,” the statement read, adding that doctors have advised against any further performances and that rescheduling is not an option.
The farewell tour began on Saturday, July 5th, in Lynne’s hometown of Birmingham, England, under already challenging circumstances. Despite having broken his left hand in an accident involving a taxi door, Lynne took the stage, though he was unable to play guitar. Fans had hoped for a triumphant send-off at Hyde Park, a venue that held special meaning for Lynne, who had described it as the perfect place to close the chapter on ELO’s storied career.
