Earlier this month, the long-running legal dispute between Daryl Hall and John Oates finally came to a close. Hall filed the lawsuit in 2023 over Oates’ attempt to sell his share of the rights to their extensive music catalog. The public fallout afterwards brought a sad end to the duo’s long partnership.
John Oates has now spoken out about whether he wished the matter could have been kept private. He said, “Well, it's always nice to keep your business private, but unfortunately there's certain things that you have no control over… Daryl Hall and I have reached an amicable separation of our business partnership and we're both focused on pursuing whatever our respective artistic goals are.”
Any future work together seems highly unlikely. Daryl Hall told The Times of London earlier this year, “That ship has gone to the bottom of the ocean,” expressing deep disappointment and a sense of betrayal. Oates echoed the sentiment in Rolling Stone, saying, “I don't see it. I really don’t. Life is funny though. You never know what kind of curve it will throw you.” Their final performance together took place on October 22, 2022, in Laughlin, Nevada.
