Back in August, the music world lost Mike Fisher, guitarist and co-founder of the band that eventually became Heart. Before Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson joined, Mike was already shaping the group’s future—and inspiring Ann’s lyrics for “Magic Man.” Nancy recently shared her own memories, saying the song tells a story that still resonates: a girl leaving home for love. In their case, it was love and rock history in the making.

Mike wasn’t just the “Magic Man”—he was the band’s behind-the-scenes engine. Nancy called him a “task master in the best way,” helping Heart get its start and even designing their iconic logo. When his brother Roger Fisher let them know Mike was in rapid decline from pancreatic cancer, Nancy left him a voicemail to say thank you—for everything.

She heard back that it meant the world to him. Mike may not have been on stage, but his impact on Heart was undeniable.
