Paul McCartney is getting real in his new book Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run, out tomorrow. One wild chapter dives into the 1969 rumor that he was dead—sparked by a U.S. DJ and believed by millions. “In so many ways, I was dead,” McCartney writes, reflecting on the chaos of The Beatles breakup and the toll it took on him.

Feeling lost and drained, McCartney says he needed a total life reset. That fresh start came with his 1970 solo album McCartney, followed by Ram in ’71, and the birth of Wings later that year.

Sir Paul’s “Got Back” tour is in Nashville on Thursday and Columbus, Ohio on Saturday.
