Suzy Quatro made quite a name for herself back in the 70’s for her role as Leather Tuscadero on “Happy Days.” The Detroit native also scored a huge hit in 1979 with “Stumbin’ In,” a duet with Chris Norman. Suzy has been living in England since 1971.
Suzy just discovered she’s been unintentionally breaking British driving law for more than five decades — and she’s laughing about it now. When she moved to England in in the 70’s, someone told Suzy that an American license was perfectly fine, and she took them at their word. “I was told when I started to drive in this country that my American license was fine,” she told The Mirror. She had insurance, even speeding tickets — everything looked legit.
Fast-forward to January of this year, when she learned two inconvenient truths: her U.S. license was only valid for 12 months in the U.K., and new American rules meant she couldn’t renew without proving she’d lived in her home state for six straight months. “Of course, I can’t. I live here,” she said. So, last Wednesday, at 75, the woman who’s been behind the wheel since she was 16 finally sat for — and passed — the U.K. driving test.
Suzy is set to release a new album Freedom this Friday, March 27th, featuring a duet with fellow Detroit icon Alice Cooper on “Kick Out the Jams.” Suzy’s already posted a new video for the album’s title track on YouTube.
