Paul McCartney has announced a new album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, arriving May 29th. It’s his 20th solo release and the first single is already out. “Days We Left Behind,” is streaming now on YouTube, setting up a record that moves fast but looks really looks back.
McCartney calls it a full-on memory trip, saying the title comes straight from the song’s lyrics. The track reflects on the rock n’ roll icon’s past, especially his Liverpool roots, with nods to John Lennon, Forthlin Road, and nearby Dungeon Lane. He also revisits growing up in Speke, a working-class area where McCartney says there wasn’t much money, but plenty of character. As he puts it, you didn’t notice what you lacked because the people made it enough.
The project started five years ago when McCartney linked up with producer Andrew Watt, whose résumé includes The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Pearl Jam, Ozzy, and Lady Gaga. Their first session produced the album opener, “As You Lie There,” with Sir Paul playing every instrument. The Boys of Dungeon Lane features 14 tracks in all and marks his first album since McCartney III in 2020.
