Steely Dan are officially done—according to Amy Helm, who is the stepdaughter of Donald Fagen and daughter of the late Levon Helm of The Band. She tells Vulture.com that Fagen is happily retired, living full-time in Woodstock, New York, enjoying life without deadlines, pressure, or touring anytime on the horizon.
The rock ‘n roll legend hasn’t quit music altogether. Fagen still plays piano and performs occasionally with the family band at Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble. He’s also reportedly working on an album with Levon Helm’s son—purely for the joy of it. As Helm puts it, he’s soaking up the downtime and letting things unfold naturally.
Fans recently caught a glimpse of that relaxed vibe when Fagen appeared in a few of Helm’s Instagram videos that quickly went viral. He responded with his dry wit: “We must really have our finger on the pulse of the nation.” Fagen last played as Steely Dan in March 2024 opening for the Eagles, following the loss of bandmate Walter Becker in 2017 and his wife Libby Titus in 2024.
