Lindsey Buckingham has stopped audiences in their tracks for years at Fleetwood Mac live shows and his solo shows with “I’m So Afraid,” a song first released on Mac’s 1975 self-titled album. The song has been a concert highlight for decades.
During a recent episode of his YouTube series Lindsey Reacts, Buckingham talked about the band’s 1997 reunion concert, The Dance, while watching it again with his kids, Leelee and Will.
Buckingham explains that the version his kids were seeing was years in the making, saying it “took many years to evolve into what this is.” When his son asks what the song is about, Buckingham doesn’t dodge the answer. He says early confidence gave way to emotional turmoil after his breakup with Stevie Nicks, and that fear and pain of pushing forward alone are at the emotional core of the song.
That emotion is why “I’m So Afraid” is still one of the songs Lindsey says he truly commands on stage, along with “Go Your Own Way,” “Big Love,” “Tusk,” and “Never Going Back Again.” Buckingham says each song reflects a different side of his musical identity.
