Tom Petty’s estate has just unveiled a new extended version of “American Girl” featuring a never-before-heard outro pulled straight from the vault. The track has been remixed into a Hi-Res spatial experience by longtime engineer Ryan Ulyate, giving the classic an ever more immersive, bigger sound.
This release is part of a bigger plan, with the estate opening the archives to celebrate the band’s 50th anniversary. Releasing this new version of “American Girl” works very well as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday. The song was originally recorded on July 4, 1976, with producer Denny Cordell at Shelter Studios in Hollywood, then released later that year on the band’s debut album. Nearly five decades later, “American Girl” is getting a second life.
