Almost five months after Kelly Hansen announced he was stepping down as lead singer of Foreigner, he’s set to perform his final two shows with the band this Friday and Saturday at Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Hansen made the announcement back on May 20th during the season finale of NBC’s The Voice, where Foreigner delivered a memorable medley of “Feels Like the First Time,” “Juke Box Hero,” and “I Want To Know What Love Is.” Taking over the mic is guitarist Luis Maldonado, who’s already had some time fronting the band in South America.
Hansen reflected on his decision, saying, “Being the voice of Foreigner has been one of the greatest honors of my life. But it’s time to pass the mic.” After 20 years of touring and performing, he shared that the travel has taken its toll. Even Mick Jones, Foreigner’s founder and former guitarist, didn’t want him to go—but ultimately supported the move. Mick, now sidelined by Parkinson’s disease, praised Kelly’s energy and talent, and expressed full confidence in Luis, calling him the right person to carry Foreigner’s legacy forward.
Lou Gramm, Foreigner’s original frontman, will join the band this weekend in Atlantic City and again in December for eight shows in the Northeast. It’s all part of the celebration surrounding the deluxe reissue of their classic album 4. Maldonado, who spent five years with Train, says he’s ready to honor Foreigner’s legacy and bring his heart to every performance.
