Gregg Rolie says new album was 18 years in the making

Greg Rolie might be too busy for his own good.

The original Santana vocalist and Journey co-founder has just released Sonic Ranch, his first solo album in 18 years.

He says the project took so long to complete because of his recurring role in Ringo Starr's All Starr Band, plus the Santana reunion and a one-off project with Journey's Neil Schon.

Gregg: "It wasn't a plan. I just got busy. I got to a certain point with it around 2012 and then I got into Ringo's band. And then that's been going on for seven years, now. And, then, on top of that, I did Santana IV, that was a couple of years back, three years back. So I couldn't finish what I started. Then I also did Journey Through Time, all the while doing Ringo and so I just, I never had time to finish it all."

Working with early Santana drummer Michael Shrieve on "Only You" produced one of the real highlights of Sonic Ranch.

"He played on one cut for me. He's a great friend, I've known him since... forever. I just asked him if he would do this. He loved the song, he said, 'Sure.' He's a very lyrical drummer. So, he was the first pick for me for the song 'Only You'."
