Record companies, publishers with rights to Stones, Elton file suit

Record companies and music publishers that hold the rights to The Rolling StonesNirvanaElton John and U2 have filed a lawsuit over documentaries they claim infringe on the acts' copyrights.

The suit has been filed against producer Coda Publishing, distributor Vision Films, director Robert Carruthers and others alleging the "purported documentaries" use protected music without permission. The Hollywood Reporter indicates the companies have asked a New York federal court to declare that the defendants willfully infringed the copyrights, order that all copies of the films be destroyed and award statutory damages of up to $150,000 for each infringement plus the defendants' profits.

These films have all been pulled from Amazon since the lawsuit was filed:

  • The Rolling Stones - Their Satanic Majesties
  • The Rolling Stones - Big Hits
  • ABBA - The Gold Singles
  • U2 - Phenomenon – Part 2
  • Nirvana - The Path From Incesticide to In Utero
  • Nirvana - The Ultimate Review
  • Elton John - In Performance
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - Behind the Music
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - Phenomenon
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd - Rock Case Studies
