Elton John has Oscar plans this weekend

Elton John is taking time off his tour to fly to Los Angeles for the Academy Awards on Sunday. Elton is also nominated along with songwriting partner Bernie Taupin.

Sir Elton is hosting his annual Oscars viewing party at West Hollywood Park to benefit his AIDS Foundation, and he's also performing at the awards ceremony. “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” the song he and his longtime writing partner Bernie Taupin wrote for Rocketman, is up for Best Original Song. He'll perform it with Taron Egerton, who portrayed him in the film.

Elton John talked about on “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman:

"I wanted a kind of thing like 'I'm Still Standing.' So Bernie came up with the lyric of 'I'm gonna love me again,' and when I looked at it I got The Supremes' track of 'Come See About Me' and I got the tempo from that. And I wanted it to be like one of those old Motown soul records from the late 1960s and I wanted it to be joyous to go with the lyrics because the lyrics are joyous. And I love the result."

This is the first time that Elton and Bernie have been nominated together for the award. They won the Golden Globe in this category last month.

Elton won his only Oscar in this category in 1995 along with co-writer Tim Rice for "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from The Lion King.
