John Frusciante returns to Red Hot Chili Peppers

John Frusciante returned to Red Hot Chili Peppers just over 10 months ago and he’s working with them on songs for their new album and he's changed some things up this time.

While speaking to Australia's Double J, the guitarist says that one thing he's doing differently in the studio is using just one guitar. He says that since leaving the band 12 years ago the guitar was just something he practiced, but wasn't really a big part of the music he was making. So he's now looking to see "how many different worlds you can pull out of a Stratocaster.”

John says that on the band's other records he’d use multiple guitars, but so far on the new project, he's used only one, and is "just trying to make that guitar speak in different ways and say something different in every tune.” He calls it "a musical challenge of sorts.”

Frusciante also says that he's interacting differently with drummer Chad Smith than in past years. He says that during his last stint in the band he "didn’t even know the difference between a ride cymbal and a crash cymbal." Now, he feels that in his own way he's a drummer "through breakbeats and drum machines," so that "a lot of the drums are crazier than what we did before.”
