A 17-year-old is home at last after spending more than a decade in the foster care system. Akyra Holstein spent more than 3,739 days in foster care between 24 different placements before she was adopted by Katie Holstein.
The mom has been fostering kids since August 2017 and has also helped other foster parents with respite care, where she takes in foster kids for a short-term stay. She met Akyra in March 2019 through respite care and she returned in March 2020 and this time she’s staying for good. On the same day of the teen’s adoption, Katie also adopted one-year-old Thomas, so they’re all family now.
"The thing I love about her most is how resilient she is," Katie says of her daughter." "Even though she's been in foster care for so long only to be disappointed, she took a chance on me and my family and let herself be loved again."
