Peter Gabriel appeared at Tuesday’s star-studded “Peace Through Music: A Global Event For Social Justice” livestream. At the virtual event honoring the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, Peter performed his song “Biko” alongsideYo-Yo Ma and Angelique Kidjo.
“Biko” is Peter’s anti-apartheid protest song originally released in 1980. The track was inspired by and named after anti-apartheid activistSteve Biko, who died in police custody in 1977. It’s a fitting choice given the livestream’s goal to “call for equality, human rights, and an end to discrimination, spotlighting people of African descent and championing the full protection and promotion of human rights for all.”
The “Peace Through Music” virtual event also featured appearances from Ringo Starr, Carlos Santana, The Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann, Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready, Brandi Carlile, Josh Homme, and Run The Jewels.Fans can rewatch the full livestreamHERE.
