Don McLean isn’t upset at all that Taylor Swift broke "American Pie's" half century record.
"American Pie" hit number one on the "Billboard Hot 100" in 1972 and set the record for the longest song to hold the top spot at 8 minutes and 42 seconds. McLean held the record up until this week when Swift took it over with her song "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)" which clocks in at 10 minutes and 13 seconds.
In a statement, McLean said, “There is something to be said for a great song that has staying power. 'American Pie’ remained on top for 50 years and now Taylor Swift has unseated such a historic piece of artistry. Let’s face it, nobody ever wants to lose that #1 spot, but if I had to lose it to somebody, I sure am glad it was another great singer/songwriter such as Taylor.”
