U2’s Bono has just revealed during he has a half-brother in a recent interview on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs program.
Bono said, “I do have another brother whom I love and adore that I didn’t know I didn't have...or maybe I did. My father was obviously going through a lot, but partly his head was elsewhere 'cause his heart was elsewhere. So, I think that was part of the problem I was probably picking up as a kid. It’s a very close family and I could tell that my father had a deep friendship with this gorgeous woman, who’s part of the family, and then they had a child. And this was all kept a secret."
He went onto say that his mother Iris, who passed away in 1974, didn't know her husband had a child with another woman.
Bono also talked about speaking to his dad about his half-brother:
“I asked him did he love my mother and he said yes. And I said, ‘You know, how could this happen?’ He said, ‘It can’ and that he was trying to put it right. He was trying to do the right thing. He wasn’t apologizing, he was just stating: these are the facts. And I’m at peace with it."
Bono's parents had another son, Norman, who is eight years older than Bono.
Bono also discussed his relationship with his dad on Father's Day at Dublin's Daily Book Festival, reading from his memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story. The memoir will be published in November.
