Elton John looks back on 32 years of sobriety

Elton John just celebrated 32 years of sobriety last week. The legendary singer-songwriter says his life has gotten much better in those decades.

Elton said, "It has been the most amazing journey, one day at a time. I never thought life could be so rewarding. I am grateful to everyone who has helped me along the way. Complete strangers, who have now become firm friends. I am having so much fun, which I never thought possible when I was an unhappy addict and a drunk.”

Elton said this about his life since getting sober:

"Since 1990, and I've been sober since then, my life has been amazing, as if it wasn't before. Since I've been sober, The Lion King happened. I wrote for the stage, I've written for the cinema. I have an AIDS foundation, I've written for the theater, I have a 20-year old relationship with someone, i have two children. There are bad things that are happening, but I can deal with them. And I don't have to go into the bottle and find myself and lose myself because of it."

Elton also opened up about his substance issues:

"I didn't even know what a joint was so... I didn't drink that much. It wasn't until I did [the] Caribou [album] that I started messing around. I don't know how I did it or how I accidentally I came into it. It wasn't a wise decision. Still made a lot of good music. But it was something I to this day, I regret. I don't really need as a person to take drugs, I'm an up... I like to make me feel more energetic. And I certainly have more energy than most people."

Sir Elton also talked about a big achievement from last week -- his MTV Video Music Awards nominations for Song of the Year and Collaboration for “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix),” his hit  with Dua Lipa.

Elton said that he's "super excited... I remember ‘I’m Still Standing’ being nominated at the very first VMAs [in 1984], so it’s a delight to be here again with this song which has meant so much to me."
