Blondie took their hit “Call Me” to #1 for six weeks during the spring of 1980. The song was featured in the movie “American Gigolo,” and it made Blondie a household name.
Debbie Harry once commented on Blondie’s musical philosophy. She said, "If you look at the jacket of our first album, it sort of like talks about the concept of the new blend. Basically, I mean, that's really what you get. There really is nothing new under the sun. It's just a matter of taking... what's there and shuffling it together. Tossing it together in a new way and, basically, that's what all this is about. You hear it a certain way and it becomes you make it your own."
The movie soundtrack’s producer Georgio Moroder wanted Stevie Nicks to contribute a song for the movie’s soundtrack, but Stevie was contractually prohibited from working with another record label, and that didn’t happen.
Morder then hired Debbie Harry to add lyrics to the his melody for “Call Me,” and the rest is rock ‘n roll history. The song would go on to become Blondie’s all-time biggest hit.
