The Elvin Bishop Group took “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” into the top 10 in 1976. The song featured future Jefferson Starship vocalist Mickey Thomas on lead vocals.
Mickey first met Elvin Bishop in 1972, but didn’t join his band until 1975. Elvin Bishop played Thomas an early version of the song in 1972.It was the last song recorded on Elvin’s biggest album ‘Struttin’ My Stuff.’ It was recorded at Miami’s famous Criteria Studios.
Mickey Thomas once commented on “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.” He said, "Kinda one of the rumors and stories over the years is that it's a one-take vocal. That's almost true, it's a two-take vocal. It's one take up to the guitar solo. And then, after the guitar solo, I went back in and just sort of ad-libbed it all. You know, off the cuff and...[singing] free and on my own, that's the way I used to be. But since I met you baby, love's got a hold on me."
