Billy Joel video gets A.I. update

The Billy Joel for his 1989 classic "We Didn't Start the Fire" showed him watching a family age over the decades instead of showing footage or pictures of the historical people and events the song is about.

Recently, a TikToker who goes by the handle @digitalresonator used the artificial intelligence program Midjourney to create a new video for the song showing AI-created images of every event and person Billy sings about in the song.

It may have been cost prohibitive for Joel to do that originally because of licensing costs.

The song takes a look at what took place in Joel's life, mainly in chronological order, from the year he was born in 1949, through 1989, when he turned 40 and wrote the song. To this day, it’s not a song that Billy is very fond of.

He once said, “The melody is horrendous. It’s like a mosquito droning. It’s one of the worst melodies I’ve ever written. I kind of like the lyric though.” "We Didn't Start the Fire" was Joel's third #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100.
