Styx co-founder and former lead singer Dennis DeYoung is writing his memoir. He says, "I have finished eight chapters of the book and it doesn't suck.”
He added, "I'm writing it in a style that can best be described as conversational, not unlike [my Facebook posts]. Though more literary. I hope. I've discovered that writing a book requires many words, sentences and paragraphs. Who knew?”
DeYoung also said, "To avoid this dilemma I considered writing the first short story memoir ever to avoid all that work. Then I thought, 'Hey how 'bout the first 'pamphlet' autobiography. No time for boredom there.”
Dennis added, "But then I realized I have far too much important and unknown info to divulge so I'm back to the big slog. Maybe I'll call the book The Big Slog. It's catchy and accurate..."
DeYoung wrote most of the band's biggest hits. He was kicked out of the band in 1999, and was replaced by current singer and keyboardist Lawrence Gowan.
If and when DeYoung's memoir is completed, it will be the second from a member of the band. Bassist Chuck Panozzo published his, The Grand Illusion: Love, Lies, and My Life with Styx, back in 2007.
