Paul McCartney publishes his first photo book

Paul McCartney's first photo book, 1964: Eyes of the Stormwas published on Tuesday.

In 2020, Sir Paul discovered nearly a thousand photos he had taken with his 35-millimeter camera back in 1963 and 1964 when the Beatles first took off. 275 of the photos, which were taken in six cities -- Liverpool, London, Paris, New York, Washington and Miami -- are contained in the book's 336 pages, which McCartney wrote the foreword for.

McCartney talked about the book on BBC Radio. He said, "The '60s were so loose and doors were left over and, you know, I would invite everyone in and stuff, you know, and a lot of stuff went missing. So I thought this would all be missing. But my photo archivist, who mainly deals with [my late wife] Linda's work, she said, 'No, we got them all.' And so I said, 'Wow. Let's get 'em out. Let's have a look at them.' So I was very pleasantly surprised."

Sir Paul also discussed the photographs contained in the book. He said, "We were all very keen on photography actually because the new modern cameras then, they'd come out with the reflex cameras, like Pentax and stuff, and we all had one. So we all liked to take pictures. It's pictures of an era. So, when you're taking them you don't ever think obviously that it's gonna be historical because you're just taking a snapshot. But then this long after you look back and you say, 'Wow. That really captured how we dressed, how we looked, the hotels rooms, the style of the hotels. So it brings the whole period back."

McCartney will talk about the book with Conan O'Brien during a recording of his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, later this evening at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center in New York as part of the Tribeca Festival.
