Mick Jagger denies ever being punched by Charlie Watts

Mick Jagger has dismissed the story that he was punched in the face by his late bandmate Charlie Watts in 1984, as told by Keith Richards in his memoir, ‘Life.’

In an interview with Mojo magazine, Jagger said that the incident never happened and that Richards made it up. He said that Watts was angry and drunk, but there were too many people around to prevent any physical confrontation.

The story, as recounted by Richards, claimed that Jagger called Watts in his hotel room in Amsterdam and asked, "Where's my drummer?" Watts then showed up at Jagger's door in a suit and tie, slapped him and said, "Never call me your drummer again."

Richards also said that Watts hit Jagger so hard that he had to catch him before he fell out the window. He added that it took him a day to make them reconcile and that Watts was upset that he didn't save Jagger's jacket, which Richards had lent him for his wedding in 1983.

Jagger joked about the story and said that he turned into a smoked salmon and dived out the window. He also paid tribute to Watts, who died of cancer in August 2021 at the age of 80.

The Rolling Stones will release their new album, Hackney Diamonds, this Friday. It will feature two songs with Watts on drums: "Mess it Up" and "Live By the Sword."
